The urban wanderer possesses a third-person gaze. Just as fish sense the flow of water with their bodies, we perceive the air and the entangled spaces around us through our bodies when we drift through the city. We enter—and through this primordial bodily exploration, we generate an original, embodied understanding of the time and space we inhabit.
This kind of bottom-up, self-originated cognition accumulates in a clumped or rhizomatic form (borrowing the concept from Gilles Deleuze’s A Thousand Plateaus), in contrast to the top-down, passively received knowledge structures, which resemble an arborescent system—tree-like, with clear branches and hierarchies.
