In the last century, Le Corbusier proposed the concept of the Modulor, responding to the principles of bodily proportion articulated by the Roman architect Vitruvius in De Architectura, while also attempting to explore the relationship between the human body and architectural space through mathematical systems. Continuing in this vein, during the early stages of formal research, the designer discovered that similar discussions and applications of modularity also exist within their own cultural context. The Yan Ji Tu (Banquet Table Diagram) from the Song Dynasty, considered a precursor to the tangram puzzle, was based on a foundational unit of one chi, seven cun, and five fen (approximately 530mm). This system extended into a complete set of seven tables, and through various combinations, dozens of configurations could be created.

In this project, the designer chose 480mm as the base unit for the horizontal display system. To enhance the system’s flexibility, metal inserts were designed to slide and interlock, allowing the size of the display platforms to adapt as needed. Both the teams from the China Academy of Art and the Design Museum, as well as the designer, hoped that the overall tone of the space would align with the museum’s design language while also reflecting the unique character of Juanzong Bookstore. Descriptors such as “balanced, enduring, and substantial” served as guiding principles for the design of the display forms and the selection of materials.

By diagonally slicing a cube with a 480mm short edge, the designer responded architecturally to Álvaro Siza’s design intervention in the site, while simultaneously defining the basic form of each modular unit. These units—either independently or in conjunction with metal inserts—can be arranged and combined within a predefined modular system to create various spatial configurations suited to different scenarios.
The horizontal metal shelves of the wall-mounted display system were also designed to be interlocking, allowing for functional transitions between showcasing books or serving as visual focal points, depending on actual use. Additionally, a custom-designed set of metal “saddlebag” bookshelves was created to rest on the low wall of the atrium, injecting a sense of liveliness into the space.
